EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team scored six runs in the eighth to break a tie and beat UMass 12-6 to open up a three-game series on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

With the scored tied at 6 in the eighth, sophomore Jacob Hirsh hit a leadoff triple to knock out Kevin Dow (0-1). Junior Andy Atwood greeted Zach Clevenger with a go-ahead triple and senior Anthony Gomez belted a two-run home run. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore Mercedes alum Oliver Closner IV hit a fly ball to center that popped out of Luke Oliphant's glove, allowing three runs to score to cap the inning.

That made a winner of senior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson (1-2), who pitched the final two innings.

Three UTRGV (10-4) players had multi-hit games, including Hirsh, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a career-high three runs scored, Atwood, who went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored, Gomez, who went 3-for-5 with a career-high four RBI and two runs scored, and junior Conrado Diaz, who went 2-for-3 with a walk. Atwood now has nine multi-hit games while Gomez has six, Diaz has four and Hirsh has two.
