EDINBURG – Senior
Trevelle Hill struck out a career-high eight batters to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team past UMass 4-1 on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Hill (4-0) pitched a season-high seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and three walks.
Sophomore
Max Balderrama Jr. took over for Hill in the eighth and pitched two hitless innings for his first save.
Sean Harney (0-1) matched Hill nearly inning-for-inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two in 6.1 innings.
UTRGV (11-4) scored its first run in the fourth on an RBI-single by sophomore
Jacob Hirsh.
Freshman Vela alum
Aaron Galvan added an RBI-single in the fifth to put UTRGV up 2-0. Galvan also drew two walks to reach base a game-high three times.
UMass (3-3) scored its run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by
Logan Greene to make the score 2-1.
UTRGV then scored twice in the seven on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by junior
Elijah Alexander.
UTRGV and UMass wrap up this three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. The game features the Strike Out Hunger promotion. Fans donating five non-perishable food items at every Sunday home game receive free general admission. Donations benefit the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. Gates open at 11 a.m.
