Baseball Wins Marathon at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team beat Grand Canyon University (GCU) 8-5 in 13 innings on Saturday at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.

This was UTRGV's (22-12, 8-3 WAC) longest game since March 17, 2018, a 4-3 13-inning home win over Eastern Michigan. This was UTRGV's longest conference and road game since May 5, 2016, a 3-2, 13-inning loss at Utah Valley.

At 8-3, UTRGV is off to its best WAC start in program history.

With the win, UTRGV clinches its first-ever road series victory over GCU (17-17, 5-6 WAC) and its first series victory over GCU since 2014.

In the 13thZach Barnes (1-1) issued one-out walks to junior Elijah Alexander and sophomore Mercedes alum Oliver Closner IV. Sophomore Jacob Hirsh followed with a go-ahead single. Then, after a bunt-single by senior Anthony Gomez loaded the bases, junior Coleman Grubbs hit a grounder to short. The throw to second was in time for one out, but the relay to first sailed high, allowing two runs to score.

That made a winner of junior Rickey Arvealo (3-0), who retired both batters he faced in the 12th.

Senior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson struck out one in a perfect inning for his seventh save of the season and 14th of his career, moving into sole possession of the second-highest total in program history and now just two shy of the record.

UTRGV built a 5-0 lead over the first four and a half innings, scoring on a single by senior Anthony Gomez in the third and two-run home runs by juniors Elijah Alexander and Christian Sepulveda in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Graduate student Conner Dotson was almost untouchable over the first four innings, striking out five while allowing just one hit.

In the fifth, however, GCU put two on with one-out to set-up a Jonny Weaver single to knock out Dotson. Then, with two outs, Brock Burton hit an RBI-single, Quin Cotto nhit an RBI-double and Kona Quiggle hit a two-run single to tie the game.

Senior Ben Butler, sophomore Max Balderrama Jr. and senior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II combined to pitch 6.1 innings of scoreless relief.

UTRGV and GCU close out this three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
