Baseball Falls to California Baptist in Series Opener

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team fell 6-3 to California Baptist University (CBU) in the opening game of the series on Thursday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
CBU (24-13, 9-4 WAC) got the scoring started against UTRGV starter Trevelle Hill (6-2) in the top of the first. Back-to-Back singles by Chad Castillo and Andrew Bash put runners at the corners when Ryan Mota hit an RBI single giving CBU the 1-0 lead.
 
UTRGV (23-13, 9-4 WAC) answered back in the bottom of the third as sophomore Oliver Closner IV started the inning with a walk. One out later, a single by junior Coleman Grubbs put runners on the corners for senior Anthony Gomezwho delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Junior Conrado Diaz followed with an RBI groundout that scored Grubbs giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
 
Hill didn't allow another hit until Bash and John Glenn started the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles. Damon Keith hit an RBI single that scored Bash from third and before Rory Smith hit an RBI singles, Billy Rockefeller drove in another run on a fielder's choice, and Harrison Spohn hit an RBI single giving CBU the 5-1. 
 
Hill took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings pitch. 
 
CBU picked up another run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by Glenn that made it 6-1.
 
Grubbs then started the bottom of the seventh with a walk, as he reached base five times going 3-for-3 with a couple of walks. A single by Diaz put runners on the corners as junior Christian Sepulveda hit a sacrifice fly scoring Grubbs from third make it 6-3 in favor of CBU.
 
That's as close as UTRGV would get as Matt Mogollan picked up his fifth save of the season after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing just one hit.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Friday for the second game of the series with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Friends and family four packs will be available, meaning four tickets, four hot dogs and four drinks for $25.
