SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) 6-4 on Tuesday at Sullivan Field.
UTRGV (25-14) trailed 6-0 after five innings. In the sixth, however, junior
Christian Sepulveda broke through against
Luke Taggart (7-3)with his seventh home run of the season.
UTRGV added two runs in the seventh on junior
Tyler Torres' first home run of the season and a wild pitch that scored junior
Elijah Alexander.
Torres came up with a run-scoring single in the eighth as well.
In the ninth, however,
Tyler Miller, who pitched the final three innings, didn't allow a run for his first save.
Torres finished a season-high 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Alexander went 2-for-3 with a double. Senior
Anthony Gomez and freshman
Jacob Flores each finished with two hits.
UIW's (26-14) offense was buoyed by three home runs, including two in the third inning when
Sean Arnold hit a solo shot and
Taylor Smith hit a two-run home run to make the score 4-0.
Ryan Flores added a home run in the fifth to make the score 6-0.
UIW took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first against junior
Austin Alarid (0-1) on a Smith single.
Arnold added an RBI-single in the fourth that made the score 5-0.
Eddy Gonzalez went 3-for-4 while Arnold, Flores and Smith each finished 2-for-4.
UTRGV returns home for a three-game series against Seattle U starting on Friday at 7 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
