First Day Results

SAN MARCOS –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams opened up the Bobcat Classic by winning four events on Friday at the Texas State University Track and Field Stadium.
 
Senior Diamond Thomas started off the day by winning the women's hammer throw after a mark of 52.97 meters. Freshman Samariae Bonds posted a third place finish with a career-best throw of 47.21 meters while freshman Alexandrea Hurst also set a new career-best mark with a throw of 46.95 meters.
 
On the men's side, junior Michael Gonzalez finished in fifth place with a career-best throw of 48.67 meters.
 
Senior Idatonye Cheetham-West recorded a win in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.08 meters. Senior Dai'ja Coleman added a seventh place finish after a leap of 5.45 meters.
 
Freshman Weslaco alum Jon Zapata finished tied for first in the men's pole vault after clearing a height of 4.30 meters and freshman La Feria alum Julian Trevino won the men's javelin throw with a mark of 50.10 meters. 
 
After the first day, the women's team is in second place as a team with 50 points and the men's team is in second place with 45 points.
 
UTRGV resumes action on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women's discus. Track events get underway at 3 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay.
