Day One Recap
OREM, Utah. – Junior
Idatonye Cheetham-West and freshman
Samariae Bonds won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships in the long jump and shot put, respectively, to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) outdoor track & field teams during day two of the WAC Championships on Friday at Hal Wing Track.
Cheetham-West recorded a program record jump of 6.43 meters, which is tied for the 11
thbest mark in the nation and sixth best in the west region entering Friday's action. Freshman
Zarrey Sams finished fifth with a jump of 5.72 meters, giving UTRGV 14 points in the event.
Cheetham-West also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.95 seconds to qualify for the finals.
Bonds recorded a throw of 15.48 meters, a personal record and the second-best in program history. UTRGV earned 20 points in the event, as sophomore
Alexandrea Hurst came in second with a throw of 14.81 meters, the 10
th-best in program history, and senior
Diamond Thomas placed seventh with a throw of 13.60 meters.
The women's team added two points in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as senior Los Fresnos alum
Jennifer Zapata finished seventh with a time of 11:14.37, the fifth-best in program history, and one point in the Heptathlon, as freshman
Elizabeth Ortiz finished eighth with 4,056 points, the third-highest total in program history.
The women now rank third in the team standings while the men rank fourth.
The men's team earned seven points in the men's shot put, as junior PSJA Memorial alum
Michael Gonzalez finished third with a mark of 16.08 meters and sophomore Palmview alum
Ricky Espinoza placed eighth with a throw of 13.95 meters.
Freshman
Antoine Godin added three points by coming in sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:45.26.
Including Cheetham-West, UTRGV had 14 student-athletes advance to the finals of their track events.
On the women's side, junior
Ashley Hughes recorded the second-best 400-meter dash in program history at 54.11 seconds while senior
Destiny Rutherford recorded the sixth-best time at 56.41 seconds. Hughes followed that up with the third-best 200-meter dash in program history with a time of 21.12 seconds.
Other qualifiers include senior
Felicia Wills and freshman Harlingen alum
Jasmyn Tulloch in the 400-meter hurdles and freshman
Kyra Keurentjes in the 800-meter run.
On the men's side, senior
Dimitris Levantinos qualified in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles, including a time of 52.17 seconds in the later, the fourth-best in program history. Freshman Harlingen alum
Roel Renteria also advanced in the 400-meter hurdles.
Junior
Brandon Sanders won the 400-meter dash preliminary with a time of 47.90 seconds. Freshman
Mariano Hernandez qualified in the same event.
Other qualifiers include freshman Brownsville Veterans Memorial alum
Max Carmona in the 800-meter run and freshman
Maxime Gardes in the 100-meter dash.
Actions concludes on Saturday with field events starting at 1 p.m. and track events starting at 3:50 p.m.
