OREM, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field teams are both in fourth place at the Western Athletic Conference Championships following day one of competition at Hal Wing Track.
The women earned points in both of the events the team completed. Freshman
Dorcas Koech earned eight points by finishing second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:39.93, the second-fastest in program history.
Senior
Diamond Thomas scored four points by finishing fifth in the hammer with a throw of 51.97 meters, the seventh-best in program history.
On the men's side, UTRGV earned 14 points in the hammer. Freshman Harlingen South alum
Sky Tatum finished third with a throw of 50.00 meters, junior PSJA Memorial alum
Michael Gonzalez came in fourth with a throw of 49.12 meters, and senior
Jonathan Ojeda placed sixth with a throw of 46.72 meters.
Freshman Weslaco alum
Jon Zapata gave UTRGV another four points with a fifth-place pole vault of 4.43 meters while freshman La Feria alum
Julian Trevino earned three points with a sixth-place javelin throw of 52.11 meters.
Actions resumes on Friday with the final three events of the heptathlon at 11 a.m., field events at 3:30 p.m., and track events at 4:30 p.m.
