CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garcia won the Singles "A" Draw Championship to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team at the Contender CrossFit Islander Open on Sunday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
De Felipe Garcia faced off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Pascal Lorieul and opened with a 6-1 in the first set. That set up the second set that went back and forth but de Felipe Garcia came away with the 7-6 win to take home the championship. 
 
Sophomore Georgije Babic added a victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Carlos Berna Ruiz in the "B" Draw. Babic opened with a 7-5 win in the first before falling 2-6 in the second. Babic outlasted Ruiz in the third set 12-10. 
 
Junior Zane Kohrs closed out the weekend with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 win over Lamar's Joshua Sundaram for fifth place in the "C" Draw.
 
Junior Alberto Mello played for the "E" Draw championship but fell to Incarnate Word's Nedim Amic to finish in second place.
 
In doubles, Kohrs and Mello teamed up to close out the weekend with a 6-1 win over Laredo Community College's Nicolas Dominguez and Jorge Abreu in the "B" Draw.
 
UTRGV will be back in action at the ITA Regionals from October 25-27 in Waco.
