RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Laredo Community College 4-3 on Thursday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. 
 
With the score tied at 3-3, the match came down to No. 1 singles where junior Carlo Izurieta was facing Juan David Ramirez. Izurieta open his match with a tight 7-6 win in the first set and then found himself trailing in the second set but battled back to win 7-5 to clinch the win. 
 
The Vaqueros (1-4) got the scoring started as it took two of three matches in doubles. Izurieta and junior Alberto Mello picked up the 6-3 win over Gonzalo Iojes and Adrian Martinez. 
 
After falling at No. 2 doubles, UTRGV got the point after a 6-4 win by junior Michael Loyd and sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garciaover Diego Orduz and Nicholas Dominguez on at No. 3 doubles. 
 
Laredo Community College opened singles with a win at No. 6 singles but Mello answered with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rodrigo Mere at No. 5 singles. 
 
De Felipe Garcia added a 6-3, 6-3 win over Rafael Bednarczuk at No. 2 singles before Laredo Community College won at No. 2 and 4 singles to set up Izurieta's clinching win. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action Friday, February 21, when it opens play at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi.
