STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team opened up a three-game series against the No. 24 Oklahoma State University Cowboys with a 17-2 loss on Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Vaqueros' (2-3) first run came in the seventh on a one-out RBI-single by sophomore Vela alum
Aaron Galvan.
Junior
EJ Taylor hit his first-career home run in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Junior
Kevin Stevens (1-1) started the game by retiring the first six batters he faced, extending his streak to seven-straight hitless innings against Big 12 competition to open the season.
The first two batters of the third singled, however, and the Cowboys (3-2) went on to score on a sacrifice fly by
Noah Sifrit and a single by
Jake Thompson to go up 2-0.
Then, in the fourth,
Max Hewitt came up with a one-out RBI-single ahead of a two-run home run by
Justin Campbell. After a
Hueston Morrill single knocked out Stevens, Sifrit welcomed junior Edinburg alum
John Henry Gonzalez with an RBI-triple. One batter later, Thompson lifted a sacrifice fly,
Alix Garcia hit an RBI-single,
Caeden Trenkle hit an RBI-triple,
Carson McCusker reached on an error to bring home Trenkle, and then Hewitt and Campbell singled to put the Cowboys up 11-0.
The Cowboys added three more runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Garcia and a single by Trenkle.
Junior
Ricky Gerik Jr. stopped the scoring by striking out three of the four batters he faced in the sixth.
In the seventh, however, the Cowboys added two runs on a McCusker double and a Hewitt sacrifice fly. Garcia tacked on a run with an RBI-single in the eighth.
The Vaqueros had one hit against Cowboys starter
Parker Scott (2-0), a third-inning one-out single by junior
Jacob Hirsh. The Vaqueros had three other baserunners, as senior
Elijah Alexander drew a one-out walk in the second, senior
Conrado Diaz drew a one-out walk in the fourth, and junior
Freddy Rojas Jr. was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth. Scott struck out 10 in six innings.
UTRGV and No. 24 Oklahoma State play the middle game of this series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
