CORPUS CHRISTI –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team finished in eighth place at the Islander Classic on Tuesday at Corpus Christi Country Club.
 
UTRGV finished with a three-round score of 938 after posting a final round 317. UTRGV finished just two shots back of Southern Illinois for seventh place while also finishing behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. 
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi gained three points in the showdown standings with their fourth place finish to clinch the victory in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
 
Sophomore and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio posted the team's best finish coming in tied for 21^stwith a three-round score of 230 after turning in a final round 80. Freshman Sophia Tejeda tied for 26^thwith a three-round score of 233 after carding a team best final round of 77. 
 
Freshman Samantha Garza tied for 34^thwith a three-round score of 235 with a final round 79. Senior Tilda Green came in tied for 44^thafter a final round 81 for a three-round score of 240 while fellow senior Vicky Gonzalez tied for 71^stwith a three-round score of 253 with a final round 86. 
 
Junior and Los Fresnos alum Briana Garza tied for 58^thwith a three-round score of 246 after posting a final round 78. Senior Rachel Yu came in 74^thwith a three-round score of 255 after a final round 88 and sophomore Blayke Van Houten finished in 81^stwith a three-round score of 269 with a final round 86.
 
Sam Houston State held on to win the team title with a three-round score of 893 after posting a final round 291. Incarnate Word's Lauren Mancha won the individual title with a three-round score of 218 after a final round 75.
 
UTRGV will be back in action from March 2-3 when it hosts the UTRGV Invitational at McAllen Country Club.
