RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday that a record 218 student-athletes are part of the Spring Athletic Director's Honor Roll by achieving a grade point average of at least 3.0 while serving as full-time students as part of a team during the spring semester.
A record 68 student-athletes earned a perfect GPA of 4.0.
Additionally, a record 147 student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least 3.50 to earn Dean's List recognition.
"This was one of the most disruptive semesters we have ever seen, but our student-athletes were a beacon of light," UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics
Chasse Conque said. "Our young people put in a tremendous amount of work, and I couldn't be more proud of what they accomplished."
By percentage, a record 89.34 percent of student-athletes earned a spot on the AD Honor Roll; a record 60.74 percent earned Dean's List recognition; and a record 28.1 percent recorded a 4.0 GPA.
As a whole, the department's spring GPA – encompassing 242 student-athletes – was 3.48. This is believed to be the highest single-semester GPA in department history. The departmental cumulative GPA now stands at 3.38.
All 16 sport programs recorded team GPA's above 3.0.
Women's tennis recorded a department-best 3.84 GPA. Volleyball was close behind with 3.80.
The men's soccer team recorded the highest GPA among men's teams at 3.66.
Women's track & field had the most student-athletes named to the AD Honor Roll with 34, while men's track & field was right behind at 32.
Five teams had 100 percent of their student-athletes earn a spot on the AD Honor Roll, including both golf teams, men's soccer, women's tennis and volleyball.
The track & field teams had the most student-athletes named to the Dean's List, with 23 from each team. A department-best 92.31 percent (12-of-13) of volleyball student-athletes earned Dean's List recognition.
Women's tennis was one away from 100 percent, with six of seven (85.71 percent) student-athletes earning the honor. Men's soccer led men's teams with 77.78 percent (21-of-27).
The women's soccer team had the most 4.0 GPA's with 11, accounting for half of the squad. Men's track & field was right behind with 10. Women's tennis had a department-high 57.14 percent (4-of-7) of its student-athletes earn prefect GPA's. Men's soccer led men's teams with 29.63 percent (8-of-27).
Conque also commended UTRGV's coaches and the Victory Center staff of dedicated academic advisors.
"Our team worked day and night to make sure our student-athletes, who are currently spread out in different time zones across the globe, had everything they needed to succeed," Conque said.
