Final Scores
CORPUS CHRISTI –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team finished in seventh place at the Islander Classic on Tuesday at Corpus Christi Golf Course.
UTRGV wrapped up the second round with a team score of 315 and then posted a final round 317 for a three-round score of 948. UTRGV finished two shots behind Ball State for sixth place and seven shots behind Incarnate Word for fifth. UTRGV also finished behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who finished in second place, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
Corpus Christi now leads UTRGV 22.5 points to 16.5 points in the showdown standings.
Redshirt sophomore
Julie Lucio led the Vaqueros with a three-round score of 226 as she finished tied for fifth place. Lucio posted a second round of 75 and then followed that with a final round 74.
Redshirt junior
Briana Garza finished tied for 29
thwith a three-round score of 239 after posting a second round 79 and a final round 83. Freshman
Mercedes Vega finished in 33
rdwith a three-round total of 243 with rounds of 81 and 80.
Redshirt freshman
Sophia Tejeda finished in 37
th with a three-round score of 245 after posting a second round 85 and a final round 80 while junior
Ellie Darnell finished tied for 43
rdwith a three-round score of 251 after rounds of 80 and 85.
Sam Houston won the team title with a three-round score of 890 while Sam Houston's Leah Alberto held on to the first round lead to win the individual title with a three-round score of 217.
UTRGV will be back in action from March 1-2 at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona.
The next event in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, will be a women's golf tournament from March 8-9 at McAllen Country Club.
