KINGSVILLE– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team split its doubleheader with the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas 2-5 and 4-0 on Saturday at Javelina Tennis Court for its first win of the season.
 
In the first match of the day, the Vaqueros (1-7) took the doubles point by winning its matches at No. 2 and 3 spots. The duo of redshirt sophomore Katarina Sasaroga and freshman Isabelle Bahr defeated Alessa Maier and Raina Zaffor 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. 
 
At the No. 3 spot, the team of redshirt freshmanValeria Montero and freshman Lea Karren defeated Milou Ter Morsche and Jana Knaab 6-0.
 
In singles, the Javelinas (1-2) won five of the six courts to clinch the win. 
 
The Vaqueros picked up its second point of the match as freshman Lea Karren picked up her first-career win with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Knaab at the No. 6 spot. 
 
In the second match, the Vaqueros swept through doubles to take the 1-0 lead. Redshirt sophomore Ana Platisa and redshirt freshman Kristyna Mamicova defeated Laura Montalvo and Maya Donkor 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. 
 
Sasaroga and Bahr recorded another win over Maier and Zaffor with a score of 6-1 and Montero Karren defeated Ter Morsche and Knaab 6-4 to close out doubles. 
 
In singles, Platisa defeated Zaffor at the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-3. Sasaroga picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Knaab at the No. 5 spot and Karren beat Ter Morsche 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday, March 8, when they travel to San Antonio to face St. Mary's in a doubleheader starting at 12. P.m.
