CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team is set to face the Sam Houston Bearkats on Monday at 9 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Both teams were originally scheduled to face off on Feb. 19 before the match was canceled due to weather issues.
Last Time Out
UTRGV split a doubleheader with St. Mary's on March 8 as it won 4-3 in the first match and then fell 3-4 in the second match.
In the first match of the day, the Vaqueros went toe-to-toe with the Rattlers in doubles play as the team of
Katarina Sasaroga and Isabell Bahr kicked things off with a 6-0 win over Gabi Ioannou and Marina Vigil at the No. 2 spot.
The Rattlers won the doubles match at the No. 1 spot but the Vaqueros clinched the point as
Valeria Montero and
Lea Karren picked up the 7-6 win over Elena Munoz and Abigail Csengery at the No. 3 spot.
In singles, Karren extended UTRGV's lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Csengry at the No. 6 spot before the Rattlers tied it with wins at the No. 2 and 1 spots. Montero regained the lead for the Vaqueros with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Ioannou at the No. 4 spot.
Ana Platisa clinched the win for the Vaqueros with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Marina Vigil before St. Mary's won at the No. 5 spot to close out the match.
In the second match, St. Mary's opened doubles with a win at the No. 1 spot but the Vaqueros (2-8) bounced back with a win at the No. 3 spot as the team of Montero and Karren defeated Grace Bell and Janie Cheverie.
Bahr and Sasaroga then clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Csengery and Vigil at the No. 2 spot.
In singles, the Rattlers tied the match with a win at the No. 2 spot but the Vaqueros regained the lead as Sasaroga defeated Csengery 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot. Karren then followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alice Thane at the No. 6 spot to extend UTRGV's lead to 3-1.
St. Mary's battled back to win matches at the No. 1, 4, and 3 spots to clinch the win.
WAC Doubles Honors
Isabell Bahr and
Katarina Sasaroga were named WAC Doubles Team of the Week last week.
Sasaroga and Bahr posted a 2-0 record after winning both of their matches against St. Mary's. The duo teamed up to defeat Gabi Ioannou and Marina Vigil 6-0 helping the Vaqueros take the doubles points.
Sasaroga and Bahr then followed that with a 6-3 win over Abigail Csengery and Marina Vigil to clinch the doubles point in the second match against St. Mary's.
The duo improved to 4-0 on the season with its two wins.
Facing Sam Houston
