Women's Tennis Returns Home to Host Houston in Doubleheader Monday

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – After eight matches away from the Orville Cox Tennis Center, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team returns home to host the University of Houston Cougars for a doubleheader on Monday starting at 9 a.m. 
 
The second match will start an hour after the completion of the first match .
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV is coming off of a 6-1 win over Chicago State for its first Western Athletic Conference win of the season. 
 
The Vaqueros (3-10, 1-1 WAC) took control of the match early as they won the doubles point. The team of Katarina Sasaroga and Isabelle Bahr opened doubles with a 6-2 win over Susana Andres and Sofiya Sedovich at the No. 2 spot. 
 
The team of Valeria Montero and Lea Karren then clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Katarina Drazic and Kristina Pukhaeva at the No. 1 spot. 
 
In singles, Bahr kept things rolling for the Vaqueros as she defeated Pukhaeva 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. After Chicago State (1-8, 0-2 WAC) picked up a win at the No. 2 spot, Sasaroga answered with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Drazic at No. 3 to make it 3-1 UTRGV. 
 
Karren then clinched the win for the Vaqueros with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Andres at the No. 4 spot. 
 
UTRGV picked up its last two points by default at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
 
Streaking
Freshman Lea Karren has been on a tear ever since making her collegiate debut. After dropping her first-ever match in singles play, Karren has won seven in a row and has posted a team-best 7-1 record. 
 
In doubles, the team of Isabella Bahr and Katarina Sasaroga have won seven-straight matches since teaming up in doubles play. They have posted a perfect 7-0 record this season. 
 
Facing Houston
  • The Cougars are 10-4 on the season. 
  • Houston is coming off of an 0-7 loss at Baylor on Friday. 
  • Previously, the Cougars put together a three-match win streak with wins over Cincinnati, Tulane, and Southeastern Louisiana.
  • Houston is 44-23 in singles play this spring while posting a 21-17 record in doubles. 
  • Azul Pedemonti leads the Cougars with a 10-2 record in singles while teaming up with Blanca Cortijo to lead the team with an 8-2 in doubles. 
  • UTRGV is 0-11 all-time against Houston in a series that dates back to 2002.
  • Houston won last season's matchup 4-0 in Houston.
