RIO GRANDE VALLEY –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday that the department's 256 student-athletes now hold a 3.23 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while 196 student-athletes are part of the Spring Athletic Director's Honor Roll by achieving a GPA of at least 3.0 while serving as full-time students as part of a team during the fall semester.
One hundred thirteen student-athletes recorded a GPA of at least 3.50 to earn Dean's List recognition, including 46 student-athletes that finished the semester with perfect 4.0 GPA's. The student-athletes combined for a 3.21 GPA during the 2020-21 academic year.
"Our student-athletes continue to be a beacon of light as they have embraced a different style of learning during the pandemic," UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics
Chasse Conque said. "Our young people put in a tremendous amount of work, and I could not be more proud of what they accomplished this past academic year."
By percentage, 77.78% of student-athletes earned a spot on the AD Honor Roll; a record 44.85% earned Dean's List recognition, and 18.25% recorded a 4.0 GPA.
Thirteen sport programs recorded team GPA's above 3.0, led by volleyball, which recorded a 3.52 GPA as 13 of their 14 student-athletes (92.86%) earned AD Honor Roll recognition, including eight (57.14%) on the Dean's List and three with 4.0 GPA's.
Men's golf led the way among men's teams with a 3.50 GPA, as a department-best 100% of the team made up of 10 student-athletes made the AD Honor Roll, including a department-best 60% on the Dean's List and a department-best 30% with 4.0 GPA's.
Baseball had the most student-athletes named to the AD Honor Roll and the Dean's List with 33 and 19 respectively. Women's soccer had the second most on the AD Honor Roll with 26 while women's track & field/cross country had the second most on the Dean's List with 17. Women's track & field/cross country all had a department-high 10 student-athletes earn 4.0 GPA's while men's soccer ranked second with seven.
Conque also commended UTRGV's coaches and the Victory Center staff of dedicated academic advisors.
"Our team worked day and night to make sure our student-athletes, most of whom were on campus, but some of whom were spread out in different time zones across the globe, had everything they needed to succeed," Conque said.
