RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros Track & Field team learned on Monday that thrower
Esmeralda Ruiz earned the bronze medal in the hammer throw on Sunday at the U23 Juegos Nacionales Conade 2021 in Monterrey City, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
Ruiz posted a mark of 48.43 meters to take third place as she helped her team to 21 medals on the final day of the event.
"I am grateful and honored to represent UTRGV internationally," Ruiz said. "It was a good experience to put under my belt, and I am excited to see what I will accomplish alongside my coach in the next couple of years."
Ruiz is coming off of a spring season that saw her post three top-10 finishes, including a second place finish in the hammer throw at the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships after hitting a personal-best mark of 55.73 meters.
