RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team played the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals to a 1-1 draw on Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (3-3-1) got the scoring started early in the first half. Junior
Emily Zapata made a move past Cardinal's goalie Margaret Kofron and found the back for the 1-0 lead in the 29
th minute.
Zapata's goal gives her 27 career goals, which ties
Sarah Bonney's (2016-19) program record for career goals.
The Cardinals (0-5-1) got the equalizer in the second half as Isabella Beletic found the back of the net in the 60
thminute tying the match at 1-1.
UTRGV had the lone shot in overtime but couldn't get the golden goal against Kofron.
Graduate student
Maile Lunardi finished the night with six saves while Kofron recorded four.
The Cardinals outshot the Vaqueros 13 to eight and seven to five on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday when they visit the Texas Longhorns at 3 p.m. at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field.
