CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team closed out the Contender CrossFit Islander Open with a pair of wins on Sunday at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
 
After early rain delays and match changes, the Vaqueros were able to wrap up the final day of the tournament. 
 
Sophomore Lea Karren was in the championship match in Flight C but fell 3-6, 2-6 to. North Texas' Lucie Devier to finish in second place.
 
Senior Alicia Thal was also in the Flight H championship against North Texas' Likhitha Kalava but also finished in second place falling 4-6, 1-6. 
 
Freshman Marjorie Souza finished in third place in Flight B after defeating North Texas' Liisa Vehvilaeinen 6-4, 6-3.
 
Junior Ana Platisa closed out the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win in Flight F while sophomore Valeria Montero couldn't finish her match due to rain.  
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on September 17 when they compete at the Javelina Invitational in Kingsville.
