Draws with Results

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team recorded seven victories on the first day of the UTSA Roadrunner Invite on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
 
Play started off with doubles as the team of junior Misha Kvantaliani and senior Alberto Mello picked up an 8-6 win over UT Arlington's Nick Beamish and Anton Shepp in the first round of Draw C. 
 
The duo of freshman Sam Whitehead and junior Carlo Izurieta posted two victories on the day as they defeated teammate junior Chris Lawrance and UT Arlington's Ricardo Alban 8-7 in Draw D before beating Corpus Christi's team of Ulysse Bertrand and Guillermo Castaneda 8-6. 
 
In singles, Kvantaliani faced off against Louisiana's Karlo Kajin in Draw A as he fell 4-6 in the first set. Kvantaliani answered back with a 6-2 win in the second before closing out the match with a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker. 
 
Izurieta won his first set 6-2 against Corpus Christi's Pascal Lorieul in Draw B but dropped the second set 4-6. Izurieta outlasted Lorieul in the tiebreaker coming away with the 10-7 victory to clinch the win. 
 
Mello opened his match against Incarnate Word's Nicolas Dominguez in Draw D with a 6-3 win in the first set before falling 4-6 in the second. Mello then dominated the tiebreaker 10-2 to seal the victory. 
 
Lawrance, who was also playing in Draw D, defeated Abilene Christian's Benjamin McDonald 6-4, 6-3
 
Play will resume on Saturday starting with doubles at 8:30 a.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
