RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball punctuated a stretch of five games in 11 days with an 85-63 victory over the Chicago State University Cougars on Thursday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Mike Adewunmi led the Vaqueros (6-11, 1-4 WAC) with 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and one block for his third double-double of the season. Graduate student
Xavier Johnson scored 16 points with four assists. Graduate student
Marek Nelson scored 13 points with three blocks. Sophomore
Quinton Johnson II finished with a season-high tying nine points for the third-straight game. Junior
Ricky "Doc" Nelson scored eight points with six assists and two steals. Junior
Justin Johnson scored seven points with a career-high 13 rebounds. Freshman
RayQuan Taylor scored seven points with a career-high tying two blocks. Sophomore
BJ Simmonsscored six points with a career-high tying four assists and two steals.
Dominique Alexander led the Cougars (5-13, 1-4 WAC) with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Coreyoun Rushin scored 13 points with five rebounds and two assists.
Favour Chukwukelu scored 11 points with two steals.
Bryce Johnson also scored 11 points.
The Vaqueros jumped out to a 4-0 lead on a
Marek Nelson hook shot.
Then, down 7-4, Adewunmi hit a jumper, a layup and a free throw to put the Vaqueros up 9-7.
The Cougars followed with an 8-2 run to go up 15-11. The Vaqueros answered with a 12-2 run, capped by a
Marek Nelson three, to go up 23-17.
The Cougars closed to within 23-21, but the Vaqueros responded with six-straight points as part of a 12-5 run to go up 35-26.
The Vaqueros pushed their lead to 40-29 on an
Xavier Johnson three before the Cougars scored five-straight points over the final 77 seconds of the half to pull within 40-34.
The Vaqueros opened the second half on a 10-0 run to go up 50-34 on an Adewunmi three-point play.
Then, with the score 67-51, a
Marek Nelson alley-oop sparked an 11-2 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV visits Utah Valley on Thursday at 7 p.m. Those unable to attend the game in person can watch in the United States on
