RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team beat the Concordia University Tornados 136-81 in an exhibition game on Wednesday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Sophomore
Will Johnston led eight Vaqueros in double-figures scoring with a double-double of 17 points, 10 assists and four rebounds. Sophomore
John Shanu II scored 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting with three rebounds and two blocks. Senior
Justin Johnson scored 16 points with six rebounds and four assists. Sophomore
Sherman Brashear scored 16 points with five rebounds and three assists. Junior
C.J. Jackson scored 15 points with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior
Daylen Williams posted a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore
Derrius Ward scored 11 points with four rebounds and seven assists. Graduate student
Dima Zdor scored 10 points with eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks. Freshman
Alex Horiuk scored eight points. Freshman
Isaiah Barganier scored five points with six rebounds, three assists and one steal. Junior
Ahren Freemanfinished with four points, seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman
Noels Slivackis hit a 3-pointer to go with one rebound and one assist.
The Vaqueros shot 61.9% (52-84) from the field.
DJ Pigford led the Tornados with 14 points.
Donovan Stafford and
Jaylon Johnson each scored 11 points.
A trio of Zdor layups helped the Vaqueros jump out to a 17-8 lead over the first six and a half minutes. After the Tornados scored the next five points, a pair of layups by junior
C.J. Jackson powered a 6-1 run to put the Vaqueros up 23-14.
Two baskets later, with the score 23-18, Johnston hit a pair of free throws, shook the basket with a dunk, and hit a 3-pointer as part of a 9-2 run that made the score 32-20.
The Tornados got as close as 32-23 with seven minutes remaining in the first half before Williams scored five-straight points with two free throws and a 3-point play, sophomore
John Shanu II and Jackson flew to the rim for back-to-back dunks, and Johnston sunk two free throws to fuel an 11-0 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV opens the regular season on Monday at 8 p.m. at Kansas State on
Big 12 Now.
The home opener is set for Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. against Southwestern Adventist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now at
