RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Tuesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team swept the TicketSmarter WAC Women's Tennis Weekly Awards, with junior
Isabelle Bahr being named Singles Player of the Week and the duo of Bahr and freshman
Yaiza Vazquez earning Doubles Players of the Week.
Bahr went 1-1 in singles as UTRGV opened the spring season with a pair of challenging matches in Waco. She lost 6-3, 6-1 to Baylor's Alina Shcherbinina in the No. 1 spot, then bounced back to earn a gritty 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) win over Houston's Elena Trencheva in the No. 2 flight.
Bahr and Vazquez went 1-1 as a doubles team, playing both matches at No. 3. They dropped a tough match 6-4 to Baylor's Brooke Thompson/Lauren Littell but competed well throughout. Then, they picked up a solid 6-4 win over Azul Pedemonti/Maria Dzemeshkevich from Houston. Trailing 2-4 in the Houston match, Bahr/Vazquez closed the match strong with a 4-0 run to earn the win.
This is the fourth WAC tennis award for Bahr, the 2020-21 WAC Freshman of the Year, and her second of the 2022-23 season. It is the first WAC recognition for Vazquez in her young UTRGV career.
Bahr, Vazquez and Co. will be back in action Feb. 12 at Lamar.
