Justin Johnson became the 27
th player in program history to score 1,000 points as a member of the program as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 83-66 on Wednesday at Johnson Coliseum.
Johnson led the Vaqueros (10-11, 1-7 WAC) with 25 points, increasing his UTRGV total to 1,002. Johnson scored his first 119 points with Southern Miss in 2020-21, meaning his career total now stands at 1,121 points. Johnson went 7-for-14 from the field, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc, plus 9-for-9 from the line. Johnson has now hit 271 free throws, the 12
th-highest career total in program history, in 398 attempts, the eighth-highest total.
Junior
Daylen Williams scored 14 points on a career-high tying three 3-pointers with six rebounds and a season-high three steals. Junior
Ahren Freeman scored nine points with eight rebounds and a career-high tying three steals. Sophomore
Sherman Brashear posted a career-high two blocks.
Kyle Hayman led the Lumberjacks (14-7, 6-2 WAC) with 14 points with four rebounds.
Sadaidriene Hall scored 13 points with three rebounds and three steals.
Nigel Hawkins scored 12 points with five rebounds.
Nana Antwi-Boasiako scored 11 points with four rebounds and three assists.
The Lumberjacks scored the first six points of the game. Then, after Freeman made back-to-back layups, the Lumberjacks went on a 12-0 run to go up 18-4.
The Vaqueros answered with a 14-4 run, powered by Johnson and Williams 3-pointers, to pull within 22-18.
The Lumberjacks followed with a 7-0 run to go up 29-18 before a Johnson 3 brought the Vaqueros within eight late in the first half.
The Vaqueros trailed by 11 in the opening minute of the second half when the Vaqueros went on an 8-2 run, capped by a pair of Johnson free throws, to make the score 35-30.
The Vaqueros were still within five at 37-32 on a Williams dunk with 16:15 remaining, but the Lumberjacks responded by hitting their next six shots as part of a 16-3 run to go up 53-35.
The Lumberjacks led by as much as 19 at 58-39 before a 10-2 Vaqueros run, capped by a 3-pointer by sophomore
Will Johnston, made the score 60-49, but that's as close as they got.
