FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the TCU Horned Frogs 88-55 on Tuesday at Schollmaier Arena.
Junior
Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (1-2) with 19 points on 9 of 15 shooting. Senior
Ahren Freeman scored 10 points with five rebounds. Graduate student
DeAnthony Tipler Jr. scored 10 points with three rebounds, two assists, a career-high two blocks and two steals. Senior
Daylen Williams scored nine points.
Jakobe Coles led the Horned Frogs (3-0) with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals.
Jameer Nelson Jr. scored 15 points with four assists and two steals.
Avery Anderson III scored 15 points with two steals.
Emanuel Miller scored 11 points with five rebounds and three steals.
Micah Peavy scored 10 points with four assists.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead before an Elliott layup, a Tipler 3, a layup by freshman
J.J. Howard, and a Williams layup put the Vaqueros up 9-5.
After the Horned Frogs tied the game, Freeman restored the Vaqueros' lead with a layup that made the score 11-9.
The Vaqueros led again at 12-11 on an Elliott free throw with 11:14 remaining. The game was then tied at 14 on a pair of Freeman free throws and 16 on a layup by sophomore
Saliou Seye midway through the first half.
After the Horned Frogs scored the next six points, a Williams layup kept the Vaqueros within 22-18.
The Vaqueros were as close as 28-22 with 1:43 remaining before the Horned Frogs scored the final five points of the half.
Freeman opened the second half with a basket to bring the Vaqueros within 33-24, but the Horned Frogs responded with a 20-8 run to take a 53-32 lead.
UTRGV closes out this three-game road trip at Oklahoma on Friday at 7 p.m. on
