CHICAGO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the Chicago State Cougars 78-68 on Monday at Jones Convocation Center.
Junior
Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (3-9) with 17 points, a career-high tying five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior
Hasan Abdul-Hakim scored 16 points with four rebounds, and two steals. Senior
Daylen Williams scored 14 points with seven rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Wesley Cardet led the Cougars (6-9) with 20 points, two blocks and two steals.
Noble Crawford scored 14 points with seven rebounds, three assists and eight steals.
Brent Davis scored 11 points with four rebounds and two steals.
Senior
Ahren Freeman hit a layup and a jumper to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 7-2 lead.
The Vaqueros still led at 9-6 on a pair of Williams free throws before the Cougars used a 7-0 run to take the lead.
The Vaqueros scored the next five points, going up 14-13 on an Abdul-Hakim jumper. The Cougars, however, scored the next eight points as part of a 14-4 run to go up 27-18.
The Vaqueros scored six-straight points and eight of 10 to pull within three twice, including 29-26 on a steal and layup by freshman
C.J. Booker, but the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run to go up 36-26.
The Vaqueros pulled to within eight early in the second when Booker hit a 3 and Williams followed with a free throw to make the score 42-34.
The Cougars answered with a 7-0 run to go up 49-34 and still led by 15 at 51-36. The Vaqueros followed with a 7-1 run to climb to within 52-43 on an Elliott 3-point play, but that's as close as they got.
UTRGV hosts Incarnate Word for the non-conference finale on Dec. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
