RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team beat the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Lions 113-65 in its final non-conference game of the regular season on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros (14-14) have now won two in a row.
Junior
C.J. Jackson led the Vaqueros with a career-high 23 points, a career-high eight rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Sophomore
Derrius Ward scored a career-high 20 points with four rebounds, a career-high six assists, one steal and a career-high tying two blocks. Freshman
Isaiah Barganier posted his first-career double-double with a career-high 15 points with a career-high 11 rebounds, and a career-high two assists. Sophomore
Will Johnston scored 11 points with three rebounds and five assists. Junior
Daylen Williams grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds with three assists. Freshman
Adante' Holiman dished out a career-high nine assists with four points, two rebounds and one steal.
Like Carson led the Lions with 12 points.
Nate Henley led the Lions with 11 points.
Dion Grisnold scored 10 points.
Jacob Owen scored nine points.
The Vaqueros opened the game with four layups at the rim, including three by Freeman, to take an 8-2 lead.
The Lions pulled within 12-10, but the Vaqueros pushed back with an 11-2 run, capped by a Brashear 3-pointer, to go up 23-12.
The Lions got as close as seven at 27-20 with 7:14 remaining in the first half. That's when a layup by freshman
Alex Horiuk sparked a 24-4 run to close out the half and put the Vaqueros up 51-24. The Vaqueros hit 10 of their 15 shots during the run, including 4 of 7 from behind the arc.
Freshman
Lee Hatcher hit his first-career basket at the 8:48 mark of the second half, a 3-pointer from the left corner, as part of a 14-0 run to put the Vaqueros up 95-52.
UTRGV hosts Utah Tech at the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at
