CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team finished in second place at the Islander Classic on Tuesday at Corpus Christi Country Club marking back-to-back top-three finishes to open the spring season.
 
The Vaqueros opened the spring with a tied for third place finish at the Texas State Invitational two weeks ago. The Vaqueros finished with a three-round score of 932 after posting a final round 315 and finishing 11 shots behind Houston Christian for first place. 
 
UTRGV finished ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, who finished in fifth place with a three-round score of 956, giving UTRGV three points in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union. UTRGV now leads 23-13 in the showdown standings.
 
The Vaqueros had three golfers finish in the top-15 with juniors Sophia Tejeda and Samantha Garza, and senior and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio all finishing tied for 10^th with three-round scores of 236. Tejeda carded a final round 79 while Garza posted a final round 78, and Lucio posted an 81. 
 
Sophomore Maria Jose Ramirez finished tied for 13^th with a three-round score of 237 after posting a final round 84. Junior Mercedes Vega finished tied for 21^st with a three-round score of 239 after carding a final round 77. 
 
Sophomore Catherine Flores finished tied for 54^th with a three-round score of 251 after turning in a final round 78 and sophomore and Edinburg High alum Madi Ozuna finished tied for 75^th with a three-round score of 270 after a final round 96. 
 
The next showdown event will be a pair of tennis matches on February 25 in Corpus Christi.
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action from March 6-7 when they host the UTRGV Invitational at McAllen Country Club.
