CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders on Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center as part of the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Community Credit Union. 
 
UTRGV (3-4) was solid on the doubles courts to claim the 1-0 lead. Junior Isabelle Bahr and sophomore Marjorie Souza earned a big 6-3 win in the No. 1 flight. Junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez captured a 6-3 victory in the No. 2 flight. The No. 3 match went unfinished. 
 
TAMUCC (9-0) came back to clinch the match victory with singles wins on the first, second, fifth and sixth courts. Martinez competed well in the No. 4 match, taking the first set from Victoire Delattre 6-2, but Delattre came back to win the tight second set 7-5 and take the 10-point tiebreaker. 
 
Bahr won her fourth-straight singles match, defeating Sofia Pinto at No. 3. Bahr bounced back after dropping the first set 0-6 and fought to take the next two 6-3, 6-4 and prevent the singles sweep. 
 
The Vaqueros will return home to the Orville Cox Tennis Center for two matches next week starting with a Saturday 10 a.m. contest against Incarnate Word and a South Texas Showdown rematch with TAMUCC on March 5 at 12 p.m.
