RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez have earned the TicketSmarter WAC Women's Tennis Doubles Players of the Week award. 
 
The Karren/Martinez duo went 2-0 playing in the No. 1 doubles flight to aid UTRGV's two massive conference wins. 
 
On Friday, Karren/Martinez defeated Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse/Santa Strombacha, the Lopes' top duo and four-time doubles team of the week winners, 6-4 to help the Vaqueros clinch an incredibly important doubles point in a 4-3 victory. The UTRGV duo dominated its Sunday match against New Mexico State's No. 1 team of Anna Pinaieva/Mingfang Lisa Zhu, capturing a 6-1 win. 
 
This is the first WAC award for the Karren/Martinez duo and third for UTRGV women's tennis this spring. Karren/Martinez boast an 8-2 overall record and 2-2 record in conference doubles play. 
 
UTRGV (8-6, 3-1 WAC) is riding a three-match winning streak heading into a pair of WAC road matches Friday at Seattle U and Sunday at Utah Tech.
