RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team dropped Sunday's match 7-0 to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) Islanders at the Orville Cox Tennis Center as part of the South Texas Showdown presented by Rally Community Credit Union. 
 
TAMUCC (10-0) jumped on top 1-0 with doubles wins in the first and third flights. UTRGV's No. 2 duo of junior Lea Karren and sophomore Barbara Martinez were locked in a competitive battle that went unfinished tied at 6-6. 
 
The Islanders clinched the team victory with wins in the fifth, first and third singles flights by Valeriia Cherfus, Emma Aucagne and Sofia Pinto, respectively. Naomi McKenzie won at No. 2 to make TAMUCC's lead 5-0. 
 
Karren and freshman Yaiza Vazquez battled well in the fourth and sixth flights, respectively, but fell in both. Karren showed perseverance on the fourth court, coming back from dropping the first set 4-6 to Victoire Delattre to win the second 6-1. In the third set 10-point tiebreaker, Delattre earned a 10-8 win to take the match. Vazquez took the first set on the sixth court 6-4 against Kateryna Rublevska, but she retired in the. Second trailing 6-5. 
 
UTRGV's (4-5) next match is Friday at 12 p.m. against St. Mary's at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
