MCALLEN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team set a program record with a three-round team score of 877 to finish in second place at the 2023 UTRGV Invitational on Tuesday at McAllen Country Club.
In addition, senior and Brownsville Veterans alum
Julie Lucio finished tied for the top individual medalist with a program record three-round score of 210 after tying a career-best single round score of two-under 69. Lucio and Houston Christian's Elise Parel went to a sudden death playoff with Parel taking the individual title on the second playoff hole.
The Vaqueros broke their previous program record of 890, that was set in the spring of 2022, by 13 strokes. It's only the second time in program history that a three-round team score breaks the 900-mark. The 877 also allowed UTRGV to finish ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for three points in the South Texas Showdown, presented Rally Credit Union. UTRGV has regained the lead 26-25.
Junior
Mercedes Vega posted her second top-10 finish of the spring as she finished in seventh place with a three-round score of 216, which ranks the second lowest three-round score in program history, after carding a final round 74. Sophomore
Maria Jose Ramirez finished tied for 18
th with a three-round score of 227 after a final round 79.
Junior
Samantha Garza finished tied for 21
st with a three-round score of 228 after posting a final round 76.
Sophia Tejeda finished tied for 28
th with a three-round score of 230 after turning in a final round 76. Freshman
Jackie Howard Gonzalez tied for 16
th with a three-round score of 226 as a final round 77.
Sophomore
Catherine Flores posted a final round 81 to finish tied for 54
th with a three-round score of 239 and sophomore and Edinburg High alum
Madi Ozuna finished in 69
th with a three-round score of 249 after improving by 13 strokes with a final round 75.
Houston Christian won the team title with a three-round score of 863 after a final round 296.
The Vaqueros will be back in action from March 13-14 at the Houston Christian University Invitational at Riverbend Country Club.
