RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that junior
Lea Karren, of the women's tennis team, is the Killers Golf UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
Karren went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles over the weekend to help the Vaqueros to a pair of wins over Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston.
In UTRGV's 4-3 win over SFA, Karren teamed with
Barbara Martinez in doubles to beat Alkmini Giannakogiorgou and Jemma Cave 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Karren then clinched the win for UTRGV with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 win over Giannakogiorgou in the No. 1 singles spot.
On Sunday, Karren helped send the seniors off with a 6-1 victory over Sam Houston as she teamed up with Martinez to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Paula Cerda and Sahithi Vutukuru. Karren then went to battle with Cerda at the No. 1 singles spot to earn the 7-6, 6-3 win to close out the scoring for UTRGV.
On the season, Karren is 14-11 overall in the singles while posting a 6-3 record in WAC play and has posted a 16-9 overall record in doubles while posting a 6-3 record in WAC play.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on April 27 when they open play at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Arlington.
