RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that graduate student Marlene Gutierrez, of the women's track & field team, is the Killers Golf UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
Gutierrez won one of UTRGV's eight medals at the Western Athletic Conference Track & Field Outdoor Championships. 
 
Gutierrez won the gold medal in the women's hammer throw as she broke her own program record with a massive throw of 62.03 meters. She also took seventh in women's shot put with a throw of 14.25 meters. Gutierrez contributed 12 points to UTRGV's 56-point effort to finish 7-of-13 in the women's team standings. 
 
Gutierrez won the hammer throw two other times this outdoor season as she won the event at the Texas Invitational and the Cactus Cup, where she set a meet record of 59.51 meters.

Gutierrez's record throw in the hammer throw ranks 23^rd in the NCAA West Outdoor Qualifying list and 44^th in the country.
