DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 2-1 to the #19 Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs on Thursday at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium in their season opener.
The Mustangs (1-0) grabbed the lead early in the first half as Bailey Sparks scored in the 15
th minute with assists from Alexander Petraeus and Fredrik Skillberg.
Later in the first half, Jaylinn Mitchell added to SMU's lead with a goal past a diving UTRGV goalkeeper
Alexis Gonzalez in the 24
th minute to make it 2-0.
The Vaqueros (0-1) clamped down on defense the rest of the match and got on the board in the 80
th minute as a deflected cross was picked up by freshman
Keaviano Francis and quickly snuck it past Cole Johnson for his first career goal that made it 2-1.
The Vaqueros really put the pressure on the Mustangs in the final 10 minutes but could not find the equalizer.
The Mustangs outshot the Vaqueros 16-3 and 8 to 2 on goal.
Gonzalez (0-1) finished the night with six saves.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday when they visit #16 Tulsa at 7:30 p.m. at Hurricane Stadium.
