TULSA, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell hung tough with No. 16 Tulsa Hurricane but fell 4-1 on Sunday at Hurricane Field.
The Hurricane (1-1) didn't waste much time putting the pressure on the Vaqueros (0-2) as they got a shot of 20 seconds into the match as sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Gonzalez came up with the save.
The Hurricane were able to sneak one by Gonzalez in the 10
th minute as Malik Henry-Scott took a pass from Yuki Sekiguchi at the top of the box and found the back of the net giving Tulsa the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros came out in the second half with energy and in the 47
th minute knotted the match at 1-1. Senior
Jason Robles connected with sophomore
Juan Pablo Gonzalez with a cross in the box and Gonzalez got in in the left corner of the goal for the equalizer.
Tulsa came back with a punch as they put up four shots, but the Vaqueros got a pair of saves to keep the match tied.
The Hurricane got a goal in the 72
nd minute after a shot went off the post and Henry-Scott got the rebound and put it in for the game-winning goal and 2-1 lead. Tulsa went on to add a pair of goals in the 80
th and 85
th minutes.
Tulsa outshot UTRGV 19 to 11 and 9 to 2 on goal.
Gonzalez finished the match with four saves.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday when they head to San Antonio to visit the Incarnate Word Cardinals at 7 p.m. at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
