DENTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the University of North Texas Mean Green on Sunday at the UNT Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
"Thought we came out slow and that hurt us," UTRGV Head Coach
Mark Foster said. "They have top-class forwards but we bounced back and played well, especially in the second half. We had some growing pains today, but we will learn from it. Overall, I am really proud how the girls dug in and competed in the second half. If we can compete with that kind of character and attitude then we will find success later in the season."
The Mean Green (6-1) came out of the gates and put the pressure on the Vaqueros (2-4-1) and got on the board in the eighth minute as Bailey Wesco snuck one by UTRGV freshman goalkeeper
Anais van Doesburg for the 1-0 lead.
A minute later, Kat Burnell scored for the Mean Green as they extended their lead to 2-0.
North Texas added goals in the 20
th minute from Jenna Sheely and in the 25
th minute from Summer Brown.
That would be all the scoring allowed as the Vaqueros clamped down defensively. Van Doesburg finished the match with four saves while freshman
Emilia Compian added a save of her own late in the match.
North Texas outshot UTRGV 28 to 1 and 9 to 0 on goal.
The Vaqueros will back in action on Thursday when they visit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. as part as the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
