CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday at Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union.
With the draw, both teams earn 1.5 points in the standings with UTRGV currently leading 11.5 to 1.5. The next Showdown matchup will be a cross country matchup on Oct. 13.
"I thought we started out slow in the first 10 minutes," UTRGV Head Coach
Mark Foster said." "After that we came on strong. In the second half, we weren't able to create as much offense but we defended very well. Unfortunately, they snuck one in. I was delighted with the effort we had tonight. I am glad we were able to remain unbeaten against Corpus Christi. The non-conference has definitely helped us prepare for WAC play and we are looking forward to the start of it next week."
It was an evenly matched first half, but the Vaqueros (2-4-2) took advantage of a play in front of the Islanders (3-3-2) net. Corpus Christi tried to clear the ball out of the box, but senior
Ana Recarte-Pacheco headed it into the net giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead in the 35
th minute. It was Recarte-Pacheco's second goal of the season.
The Islanders put the pressure on the Vaqueros in the second half as they outshot the UTRGV 6 to 0. In the 78
thminute, a cross by Cariana Pou was deflected by UTRGV's defense but it was Maggie Murray who touched the deflection into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Freshman
Anais van Doesburg finished with a career-high five saves on the night.
UTRGV was outshot 10 to 4 and 6 to 2 on goal.
The Vaqueros will back in action on Sept. 21 when they open Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play against Abilene Christian at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
