CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team advanced two doubles teams to their respective flight semifinal matches and saw senior Emilien Burnel reach the semifinal of Singles Flight A during the first day of the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. 
 
Burnel teamed up with junior Borna Devald to outlast Incarnate Word's (UIW) Joao Sasso/Andoni Garmendia in the Doubles Flight A first-round match, winning 7-5 to advance to the semifinals. Burnel/Devald will face Abilene Christian's (ACU) Dario Kmet/Cesar Barranquero Saturday at 9 a.m. with a spot in the draw championship on the line. 
 
In the Doubles Flight B, the young duo of sophomore McAllen Memorial alum Agustin Salazar and freshman Ivo Isqueiro got their doubles journey started with a solid 7-5 win over Mihaly Deli/Dennis Dutine from ACU. Salazar/Isqueiro will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's (AMCC) Lucas Schurdevin/Nicolas Niox Chateau Saturday at 9 a.m. aiming to reach the draw championship. 
 
Burnel also advanced through the main bracket in the top singles draw after handily defeating UIW's Noah DeLuna 6-0, 6-1. He'll take on AMCC's Etienne Marty Saturday following the completion of doubles. 
 
In his first singles match representing UTRGV, Isqueiro battled well in a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10:2) loss to AMCC's Iannis Fernandes. Day Two of the Islander Open begins with doubles matches at 9 a.m. UTRGV's singles matches will follow.
