CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team had a good Saturday at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, racking up seven wins and putting four in position to win their singles draws. 
 
UTRGV got the day started on a high note with wins in all three doubles matches. Junior Marjorie Souza and graduate student Isabelle Bahr cruised to a 6-0 victory over Lamar's Nouray Metwally/Marika Mueller in Flight A. They'll play in the West Final Sunday at 9 a.m. against Utah State's Zeynep Ozturk/Niyati Kukreti. 
 
In the Flight B West semifinals, sophomore Yaiza Vazquez and junior Kristal Dule picked up a gritty 7-6 (7:1) win over Lamar's Elena Rubio/Jayci Wong, and the duo of senior Lea Karren and sophomore Valentina Urraco beat Texas A&M-Kingsville's (TAMUK) Raina Zaffar/Luna Jokanovic 6-1. 
 
Souza went two-for-two Saturday after securing a solid 6-4, 6-0 victory over Kateryna Rublevska from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (AMCC) in the Flight B semifinals. Souza will have a chance to win the Flight B title Sunday when she takes on Texas State's Callie Creath at 10 a.m.
 
Vazquez picked up her third win of the weekend with a good 6-3, 6-1 match over AMCC's Victoire Delattre. She'll play for the Flight D title Sunday at 10 a.m. against Milou Ter Morsche (TAMUK). 
 
Dule advanced to the Flight E final after a hard-fought, three-set win over Texas State's Mae McCutcheon, 7-6 (7:3), 5-7, 1-0 (10-6). She'll face Lamar's Saloni Tamang at 12 p.m. Sunday. 
 
Urraco picked up her second win in singles Flight X with a solid 6-2, 6-3 match against Ella Hester (TAMUK). Urraco will aim to finish the weekend as the only unbeaten player in the round-robin flight when she takes on Lamar's Jayci Wong Sunday at 12 p.m. 
 
Karren was controlling her Flight A singles match, but an injury forced her to retire.
