UTRGV Athletics and Reserva Coffee Roasters Set to Launch Vaqueros Roast

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is excited to announce a partnership with Reserva Coffee Roasters, voted Favorite Local Coffee Shop in 2024, to launch Vaqueros Roast, an organic UTRGV-branded coffee meticulously curated by both organizations.

Vaqueros Roast draws people in with an aroma containing notes of nutmeg and jasmine and features a distinct flavor with notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and nuttiness. This full, juicy, creamy coffee's smooth aftertaste has a delightful finish which beckons for the next sip.

The coffee beans for Vaqueros Roast are sourced from Chiapas, the southernmost region in Mexico, grown at altitudes of 900 to 1,600 meters on volcanic soil. Cultivated by smallholders, often descendants of indigenous tribes, these farmers plant, harvest, and prepare the coffee by hand, sparing no effort to obtain a product of which they are proud.

Vaqueros Roast is expected to be available in early November, with preorders for bags of coffee beans now being accepted at ReservaCoffee.com. A portion of the proceeds from each bag sold will directly support UTRGV Athletics, extending the university's reach into homes and bringing beneficial awareness to the university and student-athletes who dedicate their lives to fulfilling their dreams.

"As we expand on our local partnerships in the consumables category, we are thrilled to be able to work with Reserva, which was founded by alumni Danny and Michelle Quiroz, and has a location on our Edinburg campus," UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. "I am excited for the Valley to get to try this new blend as people will find that it is bold, rich, and full of Vaqueros spirit."

Once launched, Vaqueros Roast will be available online and at Reserva Coffee Roasters, which has a location in the UTRGV School of Medicine in addition to cafes at 3400 W. Expressway 83, 5401 N. 10th Street, and 4217 N. McColl Rd. in McAllen.

"This partnership brings our journey full circle – from walking the halls of the university as students to creating a UTRGV-licensed product," said Michelle Quiroz, co-founder of Reserva Coffee Roasters and a United Way board member. "We are excited for the upcoming launch and hope that everyone can start their mornings with a cup of Vaqueros Roast coffee, celebrating our community's passion for quality coffee together."

This is UTRGV Athletics' fourth branded consumable product, along with Los Vaqueros, a blood orange kölsch style ale produced by 5x5 Brewing Co. in Mission, Vaqueros Especial, a medium roasted jalapeño and chile piquin taco-style salsa produced by Tio Pelon's Salsita, whose founders are from McAllen, and Vaqueros Gourmet BBQ Sauce, a smoked serrano gourmet barbecue sauce produced by The Jank, whose owner lives in Weslaco.

UTRGV joins the University of Bridgeport, Georgia State, Marquette, NC State, New Mexico State, Omaha, and Tulane as universities known to have a branded coffee.
