RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell to the UT Arlington Mavericks 89-70 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse in front of a sellout crowd of 2,766.
Junior
Sherman Brashear led the Vaqueros (6-19, 2-12 WAC) with 15 points while hitting four 3-pointers to go with five rebounds. Junior
Elijah Elliott scored 14 points with five rebounds and three assists. Senior
Daylen Williams scored 14 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Aaron Cash led the Mavericks (13-13, 8-7 WAC) with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
DaJuan Gordon scored 16 points with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Shemar Wilson scored 15 points with seven rebounds.
Williams hit a jumper in the opening minute to tie the game at 2 and Elliott drove for a layup to keep the Vaqueros within 5-4.
The Mavericks hit six of their next eight shots to go on a 13-3 run and take an 18-7 lead.
An Elliott jumper sparked an 8-2 run to bring the Vaqueros to within five before the Mavericks scored 10-straight points to go up 30-15.
The Vaqueros chipped away with a Brashear 3, an Elliott jumper, and a layup by sophomore
Isaiah Barganier to make the score 34-22, but the Mavericks scored the next eight points to go up 41-22.
The Mavericks again led by 19 early in the second half when a free throw by sophomore
Saliou Seye, a layup by junior
Hasan Abdul-Hakim and a Williams 3 brought the Vaqueros within 45-32.
The Mavericks responded with a 13-3 run to go up 58-35. The Vaqueros scored the next five points, making the score 58-40 on an Adbul-Hakim layup, but the Mavericks followed with a 10-3 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Utah Valley. Fans can watch domestically on
