CORPUS CHRISTI – Senior Mercedes Vega finished tied for fourth place to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's golf team at the Islander Classic on Tuesday at Corpus Christi Country Club.
 
It was a career-best finish for Vega, who finished with a three-round score of 230. Vega posted her second-straight round of 76 while finishing just three shots back of second place. 
 
Junior and Edinburg High alum Madi Ozuna finished tied for 30^th with a three-round score of 246 after posting a final round 83. Junior Cristina Galban finished tied for 40^th with a three-round score of 250 after posting a final round 90. Freshman Camilla Herrera finished tied for 43^rd with a three-round score of 251 after a final round 83.
 
Freshman Natalia Rodriguez finished tied for 49^th with a three-round score of 254 after a final round of 86. Junior Catherine Flores and freshman Preston Saiz, both of which were playing as individuals, finished tied for 25^th with a three-round score of 243. Flores carded a final round 86 while Saiz turned in a final round 78. 
 
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won the team title with a three-round score of 912 to earn three points in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, standings. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi increased their lead in the standings to 24.5 to 17.5. UTRGV finished in sixth place with a three-round score of 967 after a final round 328.
 
The next showdown event will be men's and women's tennis matches on Thursday in Corpus Christi. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action from Mar. 4-5 for the Vaquero Invitational at McAllen Country Club.
