NACOGDOCHES – One match is all that's left on the regular season schedule for The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team, and it's an important one.
The Vaqueros are 9-11 overall and 1-5 in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play heading into the finale, where they'll play the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Ladyjacks (9-9, 1-5 WAC) Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
UTRGV and SFA are tied in the conference standings, one match ahead of Utah Tech in eighth. This match will determine if the Vaqueros are the sixth or seventh seed and can face an opponent they played tight against, like Abilene Christian or UT Arlington, or if they'll have to take on one of the two teams who faced off in last year's championship match.
The Vaqueros are 4-15 all-time against the Ladyjacks but last year they stopped a five-match losing skid against ACU with a gritty 4-3 win at home. UTRGV got wins from graduate student
Isabelle Bahr, senior
Lea Karren and junior
Marjorie Souza in the top three spots of the lineup in that match.
Souza has been leading the way for UTRGV, holding an impressive 15-5 mark as the No. 1 singles player. She's 4-2 so far in conference play. Bahr and sophomore
Yaiza Vazquez have been other top performers, both holding 3-3 marks in WAC action. Vazquez holds a solid 12-7 record through the spring and has consistently progressed into a reliable performer for UTRGV.
