CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team closed the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open Sunday with four wins at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Courts in Corpus Christi. 
 
Sophomore Santiago Serrano captured a good 6-1, 6-4 win over Lamar's Fabian Anthin in the south stage of the green draw. Sophomore Will Roberts also defeated a Southland Conference foe from Lamar as he picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Guy Dagan. 
 
In doubles, Roberts and sophomore Paolo Bonaguro found themselves locked in a battle with Guy and Haruki Omori-Cowie in the west stage of the blue draw. The Vaqueros duo pushed the Cardinals pair hard, but Lamar took the 7-6 (8:6) win. 
 
Freshman Brownsville St. Joseph alum Francisco Gamez picked up his first collegiate win as he defeated UTSA's Luke Cantu in a tight 7-6 (7:4), 1-6, 1-0 (10:8) match in the south stage of the yellow draw. Junior Showtime Leh battled for a comeback three-set win in the gold draw, defeating Lamar's Jonah Smith 2-6, 7-6 (7:5), 1-0 (10:5). 
 
Freshman Loic Young Kriegel pushed his match in the west stage of the orange draw to a third-set tiebreaker, but Lamar's Lukas Hamacher took the 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10:5) win. 
 
Up next for UTRGV will be the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional which runs from Oct. 17-22 in Waco.
