RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics partnered with Driscoll Health Plan, Driscoll Children's Hospital Rio Grande Valley, and the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley to distribute 23,100 pounds of food to families in need during the inaugural Give Back Day event at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.
This initiative, which helps to combat hunger and promote wellness in the Rio Grande Valley, saw the entire UTRGV football, men's basketball and men's soccer teams, comprising about 150 student-athletes, assemble and distribute 1,050 food bags to families in need. Each bag weighed 22 pounds.
The event not only provided food support but also emphasized healthy eating on a budget as volunteers offered easy-to-follow recipes and resources to help families make nutritious choices.
This initiative reflects Driscoll Health Plan's mission to improve community health by supporting families so children can thrive.
