BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team concluded their run at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Texas Regional, hosted by Texas A&M, Monday.
Graduate student
Sam Whitehead started the day with a bang, defeating TCU's Kaj Quirijns in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the consolation quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Whitehead battled against Texas A&M's Ethan Silva, using a good mix of serve and volley to squeak out a competitive first set 7-6 (7-4). Whitehead ultimately fell dropping the last two sets 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).
The Vaqueros also competed in a series of extra matches against power conference opponents. Junior
Will Roberts battled in a back-and-forth match with Texas A&M's Kriish Tyagi, ultimately falling 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4.
Earlier in the day, junior
Santiago Serrano fell to Tyagi, 6-4, 6-1 while junior
Paolo Bonaguro dropped his match to TCU's Filip Apltauer, 6-3, 6-1.
Up next, select Vaqueros will head to the Southland Conference Fall Championships where they will compete for an automatic bid to the 2025 ITA Conference Masters Championship.
