RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The City of Edinburg will honor the winningest coach in the history of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball program with the official street dedication of "Coach Al Ogletree Way," on Nov. 3 at 10 a.m.
Affectionately known as "Coach Al," Ogletree was a legendary figure who, through his remarkable career, shaped generations of student-athletes and brought national recognition to the Rio Grande Valley.
In 29 years as head coach of the university's baseball team (1968–1997), Coach Ogletree compiled an impressive record of 1,084-618-1 (.637), guiding the program to 13 NCAA Regionals and one College World Series appearance. Including his previous coaching years at Dallas (1958–65) and Sul Ross State (1966–68), Ogletree amassed 1,208 career wins, placing him among the top 40 winningest coaches in NCAA history.
Coach Al's extraordinary contributions were recognized with his induction into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987 and his selection as an inaugural member of the UTPA Athletics Hall of
Fame in 2007.
Members of the media and the public are invited to join city leaders, university officials, coaches, and the community in celebrating Coach Al's enduring legacy.
